I think what I really like here is that in a lesser show, or in reality, qualities like “toughest” and “buffest” wouldn’t be considered compliements for women. Even though they should be more then often I’ve found if a women is considered “tough” or “buff” she’s considered too manly and is therefore considered too “unwomanly”.  All of which is ridiculous and only enforcing those awful gender stereotypes and pushing us in boxes.

Women have to walk a fine line between being too manly and too feminine.  If a woman is too stereotypically manly (for example showcasing lots of physical strength and ability like Korra which isn’t a ‘masculine trait but w/e) they’re not ‘woman enough,’ making them undesirable.  But if they’re too feminine (for example like Asami wears make up, nice clothes, etc) then they’re considered weak and feeble.

So what I like here is that there’s none of those awful gender lines for Bolin when he describes Korra. Everything about her is amazing and wonderful.  From her qualities like being funny, smart, and physically pretty, to qualities that wouldn’t normally be considered good qualities for a girl, being tough, strong, and buff.  It’s something just really nice to see.  Qualities listed that aren’t held down by gender lines.

Korra has both stereotypical masculine and feminine traits, as does Bolin.  In the end they aren’t ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’ traits just traits. Just part of their individual personalities and nothing more.

"I don’t think it’s terribly controversial to note that women, from a young age, are required to consider the reality of the opposite gender’s consciousness in a way that men aren’t. This isn’t to say that women don’t often misunderstand, mistreat, and stereotype men, both in literature and in life. But on a basic level, functioning in society requires that women register that men are fully conscious; it is not really possible for a woman to throw up her hands and write men off as eternally unknowable space aliens — and even if she says she has, she cannot really behave as though she has. Every element of her life — from reading books about boys and men to writing papers about the motivations of male characters to being attentive to her own safety to navigating most any institutional or professional or economic sphere — demands an ironclad familiarity with, and belief in, the idea that men really are fully human entities. And no matter how many men come to the same conclusions about women, the structure of society simply does not demand so strenuously that they do so. If you didn’t really deep down believe that women were, in general, exactly as conscious as you, you could probably still get by in life. You could probably still get a book deal. You could probably still get elected to office."

"

Men who want to flirt with women have to realize: Women live in a state of continual vigilance about sexual safety. It’s like having a mild case of hay fever that never goes away. It’s not debilitating. You’re not weak. You’re not afraid. You just suck it up and get on with your life. It’s nothing that’s going to stop you from making discoveries, or climbing mountains, or falling in love. Sometimes you can almost forget about it. It doesn’t mean it’s not there, subtly sucking your energy. You learn to avoid situations that make it worse and seek out conditions that make it better.

If a female stranger is wary around you, it is not because she suspects you are a rapist, or that all men are rapists. It’s because a general level of circumspection is what vigilance requires. Don’t take it personally.

If this frustrates you, try to remember that women are blamed for lapsed vigilance. If a woman does get raped, everyone rushes to see where she let her guard down. Was she drinking? Was she alone? Was she wearing a short skirt? Did she go to a strange man’s room for coffee at 4am?

A woman must be seen to be vigilant as well as be vigilant. If she is deemed insufficiently vigilant, she will be at least partly blamed for any sexual violence that befalls her. If she’s regarded as downright reckless, that “evidence” can be used to completely exonerate her rapist. If it comes down to a he said/she said dispute over whether sex was consensual, as so many rape cases do, the dispute becomes a referendum on whether the woman seems like the sort of reckless person who would have sex with a stranger.

If a woman does go back to a strange man’s hotel room at 4am, even if she only wants a coffee and conversation, she’s more or less given him the power to rape her. No jury is going to believe she went up there for anything but sex. So, don’t be surprised if a stranger reacts badly to that suggestion.
